Book – Last Journey, by Darrell Griffin Snr.
Staff Sergeant Darrell “Skip” Griffin, Jr. was killed in action on March 21, 2007, during his second tour of duty in Iraq. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star with Valor for dragging a comrade to safety through enemy gunfire. At the time of his death, he was working on a book titled “The Great Conversation”, an attempt to describe and make sense of the destruction he had seen in Iraq. His father, Darrell Griffin, Sr was going to help him finish it when he returned home in July. In the face of Skip’s death, Darrell, Sr. vowed to finish the book himself. He travels to Iraq, witnessing the war close up and meeting with son’s battalion mates. Driven by a conviction that Americans don’t know enough about the war they have been fighting for the past six years, “Last Journey” is a first hand account of what everday life is like for soldiers in Iraq: it’s also an intimate portrait of a lost son, a meditation on faith, and finally, a tribute to the lively philosophical debates the Griffins used to share. Included is e-mail correspondence with Skip during the weeks before he died, as well as orginal photographs from the frontlines. Passionate and inspiring, “Last Journey” serves as a tragic reminder of the human cost of war. It is now in bookstores (e.g. Barnes and Noble and Borders). What Senator McCain had to say about “Last Journey.” “In the terrible upheaval of war, things change. Darrell Griffin saw war change his son and claim his life, and break the hearts of those who loved him. Last Journey is a remarkable and very moving account of the loss of his son, a father’s need to understand how and why it happened, and the relationship between a parent and child changed and deepened by war. Whatever your views about the purpose and conduct of the war in Iraq, this book deserves your attention and acclaim it will surely receive for its heartrending testament to the awful wages of war and the invincible devotion of love.” —Senator John McCain From Barnes and Noble Review (written by the author of “Jarhead” Anthony Swofford): “The best books succeed because they offer the reader a glimpse into a world that might otherwise be unknown, or unknown to most of us. The book at hand, Last Journey: A Father and Son in Wartime, is one of those books.” New York Times – July 2009 “…It has already been pointed out, by Thomas E. Ricks of The Washington Post, that the most honest and gripping accounts of the Iraq war have come from low-ranking soldiers, not from generals. “Last Journey” joins that small shelf of serious books, thanks to a father with a native gift for the English language, one who gave his son the greatest gift a father can give: his avid and appreciative attention.”
